Stowmarket Town Council holds an annual community litter pick, but this year it looked a little bit different.
Our Virtual Superhero Litter Pick took place on Saturday 26 September, one week after the lovely Indian summer had ended and been replaced with wind, rain and plunging temperatures. Saturday morning was no exception and more than enough to make any normal person want to stay at home with a hot drink and fluffy socks.
Yet all across Stowmarket, families were preparing to leave their homes. They were wearing capes and masks and hi-vis jackets over thick coats. They were gripping tightly onto litter pickers and stuffing orange bags into their pockets. These were no ordinary people, sitting at home with their feet up. They were Stowmarket Superheroes, the arch-nemeses of all litter! And for one hour on a bitingly cold September morning, they tackled litter all across the town. Undeterred from being unable to meet in person due to the Covid-19 restrictions, these heroes let nothing stand in their way of coming together ‘virtually’, with each person contributing to the enormous amount of litter removed from the streets.
So, from the town council, we would like to give an enormous thank you to every single person who joined in. From the littlest litter picker to the largest… thank you for taking part and for donating your time to our event.
We have to give special mention here to the insurance company, Pequod, who dressed up as the original Superheroes of Litter… the Wombles! They collected nine huge bags of litter from Gipping Way!
Another special mention to Mid Suffolk and Babergh Council, who generously supplied orange bags to all our litter pickers – thank you!
We were thrilled by the number of people who signed up and took part in the event. Due to the nature of the event, we are unable to collect specific data but we have estimated that around 80 people took part, including children, either on the day or the days either side, and around 60-70 bags of rubbish were collected.
We also ran our #StowmarketSuperhero photo competition, generously sponsored by Little Teddy’s Big Bookshop. We received so many photos it was hard to choose, but we narrowed it down to three winners!
