The Rotary Club Of Woodbridge Deben

The start of the new Rotary year in July has brought new challenges as the Covid-19 Lockdown has prevented us from meeting in person, but hasn’t stopped us meeting, undertaking our community work and planning for the future via Zoom. Rotarian Richard Boother has taken over the chair from the very successful year headed up by Rotarian Chris Walker, our first female president.

We were pleased to complete 2019/2020 by donating £1,518 to Home Start Suffolk, ( and delivering of 164 Dictionaries4Life to five of our local primary schools.

Sadly, some of our live projects have been deferred and we know many of our junior school children are disappointed they can’t go to Crucial Crew this year. Woodbridge Memory Café is also suspended, but these and many other projects will start up again as soon as we can.

Therefore, we are busy planning for when any light is visible at the end of the tunnel. We have our fingers firmly crossed that the Sleigh Run will be able to go ahead in December, so watch this publication for details. We are still hopeful that the annual quiz will go ahead in November at St Michael’s in Martlesham and our carol concert at Woodbridge School will go ahead in early December.

We are now meeting fortnightly via Zoom and our next meeting will be a talk by the chair of Home Start Suffolk, Rob Thacker. On the 10 August we have a photo competition on, Observations from COVID-19.

We are also pleased that one of our members has started his year as President of Rotary in Britain and Ireland, which is pretty high up in the Rotary organisation. Tom Griffin has been a member of Deben Rotary for over 28 years and we wish him well for the next 12 months.

We appreciate there is currently a great need for voluntary organisations to roll up their sleeves and work even harder for our local communities. That is what Deben Rotary does and will continue to do.

Deben is effectively two clubs working closely together, the main club and the satellite club. We work in and around Kesgrave, Martlesham, Melton and Woodbridge. If you are interested in knowing more about us, or in joining some of our Zoom meetings you are more than welcome. Just contact us through our website:
