The Church Roof Refurbishment Project

What a year 2020 was, quite unlike any other! Covid-19 completely scuppered all plans for the roof – both in terms of progressing with the work and for fundraising. Our information evening held back in February 2020 seems a whole different life away but hopefully with the arrival of 2021 and talks of vaccinations, we will be able to kickstart the project and go again.

Despite the church being closed for most of the year and potential purchases by tourists and visitors severely curtailed, we are delighted to say that over £3,000 was raised from selling Matt merchandise, recipe books and 2021 calendars over the year. That is a phenomenal achievement and we are so very grateful for the wonderful generosity of our amazing villagers and ‘Friends of East Bergholt’!

Additional special thanks should go to Mr Noodles and Wilfred Humphrey for their exploits to raise all our spirits during both lockdowns, and to Graham and Nicki for producing such a fab calendar and generously donating half the proceeds to the church roof fund. We salute and thank you.

In the middle of December, Liz and I met with our architect and the advisors from the diocese who have to approve our plans. We will be able to report more in the February edition about what will be happening next and what plans we have for 2021 fundraising. We hope to get a series of events going again and to resurrect some of our earlier ideas.

It is still possible to purchase Matt merchandise – with plans to expand the items displaying the cartoon – and recipe books. If there should be any calendars left, they are available at a reduced cost of £5. Please contact Liz or Fiona.

Here’s hoping for an amazing new year – and a new normal. Take care and stay safe.
