Suffolk Army Cadets 1st Annual County Food Bank Rideout Collection 2023

Suffolk Army Cadets have completed the first in what is to become an Annual Charity Event. The challenge, set by the Commandant Colonel Rob Simpkin to all 23 Detachments within the County, was to collect donations of non-perishable foods and toiletries to be distributed to various local Food Banks.

With the current cost of living crisis causing problems for many local families, contributions to Food Banks have fallen, while demand has increased massively. As part of their Community Engagement activities, Cadets organised collections at their Detachment. They arranged collection points in shops and businesses, asked family and friends, and raised funds from tuck shop sales.

In a 12-hour day on Saturday, 10 of June, a group of ACF Adult Volunteer motorcyclists traveled 250 miles around Suffolk. Starting in Stowmarket, they visited many of the County’s Detachments to thank the Cadets for their efforts and to watch the donations being presented to local Food Bank representatives.  The ride finished at the Ipswich Army Reserve Centre in the evening.

Wattisham Detachment Commander SSI Graham said, “The Cadets have been collecting for several weeks and it’s great that they are getting involved to help a national problem, in their local area.  The Cadets take part in many charity events as part of our Community Engagement Syllabus and DofE volunteering sections.  I am very proud of our young adults and the enthusiasm with which they accepted the Challenge to help their local community.  It was great to see the Cadets hand over the donations to a representative of Stowmarket and Area Foodbank.
