Helping local groups and individuals in need

Stowmarket Lions are a group of likeminded volunteers who seek to help those in need in our local communities. Now in our 43rd year we have raised over £1M since the club started and last year raised some £50,000. We raise money throughout the year with fundraising events such as our Boxing Dinner, Golf Day, Bike Ride, and Santa Sleigh.

We help groups and individuals in our local communities via our Community Services team who typically meet monthly to consider requests for help. Recently we have been able to help groups supporting people with conditions such as Motor Neurone Disease, Multiple Sclerosis, dementia, cancer and the partially sighted, as well as the local food bank.

During our Santa Sleigh last year we were able to help a family from Needham Market with a two year old girl undergoing treatment for leukaemia, here’s how: ‘Etta wasn’t able to see Father Christmas due to her being neutropenic (no immune system) but after an email to the Stowmarket Lions Club they arranged Father Christmas to stop outside on his rounds so she could meet him on his sleigh. It was absolutely magical Etta was extremely excited and it made our year. The Stowmarket Lions Club emailed us after and offered to help us , they’ve offered to purchase an armchair/sofa bed for Etta’s room to enable us to cuddle her and be close throughout the long nights of sickness and medications. We can’t thank them enough!’

Commenting on Community Services and the role it plays Lion President Bob Cuff said ‘I feel privileged and proud to be leading this amazing group of people this year. They voluntarily give their time to raise money to support those in need. It is heart-warming to know that we are helping make people’s lives that little bit better’.
