Sproughton Community Shop

We have an update by Jane Rogers from the Sproughton Community Shop

Our motto is ‘Something for Everyone’ and how true this is!

The area may be small but the range of products in the shop is vast – from beans to Bollinger and Sellotape to sausages, we stock goods for all your needs. For those of you who are new to Sproughton or who have not visited us, you must come and see for yourselves.

Opened 11 years ago in its current position in the Tithe Barn Courtyard, our little shop was the brainchild of Rosalind Lavington who championed the hundreds of hours spent raising sponsorship, grants and overcoming the challenging hurdles which led to the birth of Sproughton Community Shop. Rosalind was, and still is, a passionate believer in community support and preserving our environment and this ethos remains.

In the past year, our customers have donated over 1,000 items to the FIND Food Bank, which is an amazing achievement. You will find products in the shop which are kind to the environment and we make a huge effort to sell as many local products as possible, which are delicious and good value. We are lucky to live in a mainly agricultural area that provides us with fresh vegetables and locally reared meat.

Our industrious manager, Tracy Booth, is constantly on the hunt for new local produce. She has recently added cheese-topped rolls and cheese twists from Wheaten Mill and fruit and cheese scones which are delicious with a cuppa in the courtyard. When I am in the shop, I am always delighted to see how much local honey and eggs are sold. Customers come from far and wide and this year we have sold over 2,000 boxes of eggs – not bad when we have been opening for reduced hours!

Hopefully, by the time this article is published, we will be experiencing warmer temperatures. And with the sun come strawberries from Lindsey! There is nothing more delicious than a bowl of fresh English strawberries – a true taste of summer.

For those who are now able to spend more time in their gardens, we have a fantastic range of quality plants from Katie’s Garden to brighten up your flower beds and patios. The local growers regularly bring fresh plants and remove any which have been out in the yard for some time. Pop in and have a look.

As the country is slowly returning to some form of normality, we will be increasing our opening hours to 9am to 2pm.

The shop is run six days a week by a team of hard-working volunteers but we do need more volunteers to help with extra hours. If you have a few hours to spare each week, like meeting people and supporting the community, do pop in and have a chat with us. We would love to see you.
