We have an update from Pastor Mark Newcombe at the Somersham Baptist Church:
The Father’s gift at Pentecost
Undeserved and unexpected gifts raise suspicion. What is the giver after, we wonder, is it a mistake or a trick?
You need not fear the Holy Spirit, he is the Father’s gift to his people, delivered by the Son. As Jesus left the disciples, he gave them this instruction:
“Do not leave Jerusalem, but wait for the gift my Father promised, which you have heard me speak about. For John baptised with water, but in a few days, you will be baptised with the Holy Spirit.” (Acts chapter 1, verses 8)
The Holy Spirit has always existed, co-equal with the Father and Son, but now deployed in a new role. People of God have always known the Spirit as an occasional guest but since Jesus finally atoned for sin, he is a permanent resident. He enables us to serve the Father faithfully and effectively. This gift is given so we can live the life of Christ among the people around us. A life of love and service which is beyond our power and alien to our old nature.
What is Father God doing giving us his Holy Spirit? He is making our life full, filling us with his peace, he is blessing us. What a wonderful gift!
We resumed public worship on April 4 at the village hall where it’s possible to maintain the required social distance. Worship without the congregation singing is strange. We certainly feel the loss of praising the Lord with our own voice, but we are permitted a small group of singers who sing behind clear plastic screens. Even wearing masks, it is good to see each other and be encouraged in our faith in Jesus.
Our weekly Zoom prayer meeting is on Wednesday at 8pm.
