We have an update from the members of the Shotley Rose Bowls Club:

I hope this reaches you on a warm spring day, as at the time of writing there have be very few. Although the government’s ‘timetable’ allowed outside sport to take place from the 29 March, we have not started to practise due to weather prohibiting the preparations of the green. This should be rectified by now and the first practise rollups will have taken place.

Our new season will be very different, along with all other bowling clubs. The Suffolk League Committee has reviewed this season and decided to keep to the published timetable but not start until after May 17. All matches this season will be ‘friendlies’. The results will be published but there will be no promotions, no relegations and no prizes. Each match will be made up of just three rinks (instead of four) to make social distancing easier. The league committee will discuss the cup competitions and whether they will run after May 17 once we see how successful the start of the season is.

Therefore, our Samford League begins on Monday 17 May and the triples section on Wednesday 19 May.

As we have said before, the club would be very pleased to welcome new players. Please get in touch if you would like to try out bowling or haven’t played for a long time. We are a very friendly bunch of men and women who enjoy getting outside, playing a reasonable competitive game and then socialising with each other. Playing bowls helps people’s physical and mental health by encouraging them outside, assisting in combating isolation and introducing a new hobby to occupy the mind.

Finally, I must report that our long servicing club captain, Martin Stiff, has moved home from Shotley to Ipswich and will not be bowling with us next year. Martin has helped Shotley Rose Bowls Club in so many ways, from being an excellent player and skip to taking on the club captain role for the last couple of years and organising the teams and competitions. He was always a gentleman and great fun to be with. Martin will be greatly missed and we wish him well in all he does in the future.

Please contact the following officers if you would like to try out bowling.
