Shop Stowmarket!

Just as in previous lockdowns, ‘essential’ shops and services can still open but just what is regarded as ‘essential’? Right now, it includes supermarkets and other food shops, health shops, pharmacies, petrol stations, bicycle shops, home and hardware shops, laundrettes and dry cleaners, bicycle shops, garages, car rentals, pet shops, corner shops, newsagents, post offices, and banks. Food delivery and takeaway can remain operational too.

We are encouraged to use home delivery services as much as possible and
many of our independent outlets, including those which have been forced to close, have introduced delivery services and are taking calls and/or operating online and via social media.

Stowmarket Town Council has provided a list of town centre shops which
are still open or operating. This is by no means a definitive list and doesn’t
extend the town centre, but we felt it was important to provide what information we could at this moment. There are several online directories,
including our own where it is easy (and free) to add your business (just go to and follow the directions).

Having been here twice before, it’s likely you already know which shops in
your immediate vicinity are open and your support may be critical to their
survival and to the recovery of the local economy. Our independent retailers have invested heavily in customer safety and adapted to deliver service where and when we want it. We undoubtedly admire their efforts and appreciate the contribution they make to the community but they can’t possibly survive without customers.

Research on spending by local authorities shows that for every £1 spent with a small or medium-sized business 63p stayed in the local economy, compared to 40p with a larger business. Every shopping choice you make right now will have consequences.
