As the coronation of King Charles III approaches, at Orchard Barn we are reminded that another monarch, Queen Elizabeth I, would have been on the throne when our 1580s Suffolk Long House was first built. We are reinstating the timber frame as close to the original as possible, using traditional methods and hand tools, and have even managed to incorporate some of the 500 year old timbers into the new building. We are dedicated to keeping traditional skills alive and, at the same time, ensuring that everything we do has the minimum impact on the planet. We are sure that King Charles, with his passion for heritage buildings and the environment, would approve

In April, with the warmer weather, we will return to packing the walls with a light clay and straw mix for insulation and need more volunteers to help with this. Training will be given, and you’ll make new friends, learn new skills, and get a good green gym workout in a beautiful environment, with the satisfaction of knowing that you’re making a difference!
