After a difficult year, Mistley and Manningtree Bowls Club members are preparing to get back to bowling with a full and active season.

Now that organised sport is allowed, the club is preparing to play in the Tendring, Colchester and Sudbury Leagues, with friendly matches and their usual internal competitions filling the calendar. They kick off the season with some Try Bowling days on Saturdays 1, 8 and 15 May where people can turn up between 10am and 4pm, get on the green and try bowling at the club on New Road, Mistley. You just need flat-soled shoes.

To tie in with the Bowls National Open Weekend on May 28-31, the club has challenged Mistley Parish Council to a friendly match. Let’s hope members get an eye in quickly.

The club secretary, Karen Thompson, said: “The positives from the year just gone are that the green had a break and is looking lovely for this season and we are grateful to Tendring Council for grants which helped us survive last year with no income. It was a frustrating time, but we are looking forward to getting back to bowling and seeing our friendly members again.”

Margaret Arthey, the club president, said: “The bowls club offers a mix of just play sessions and club events as well as competition and leagues, combining play with a friendly social side. It’s much more than just bowling”.
