Ipswich to take part in The Great Big Green Week to help tackle climate change

Ipswich Borough Council is bringing The Great Big Green Week to Ipswich next week to help inspire residents to make positive changes to tackle climate change and protect green spaces.

Taking place between 18 – 26 September 2021, the climate action campaign known as The Great Big Green Week will see thousands of local events and activities take place across the UK – all aimed at getting people to act and show up for our world.

The Council has organised a range of events from community planting sessions to litter picks, as well as a special Zero Emission Day (21 September) event at Christchurch Park that will see some ofits electrical vehicles (EV) on display alongside other EV models from local car retailers. Between 10am – 3pm visitors will be able to find out more about switching to electric, get tips on how to reduce, re-use and recycle as well as plant bulbs and litter pick.

The Great Big Green Week is being organised by the Climate Coalition ahead of COP26, the United Nations Climate talks, later this year in Glasgow.

Councillor Phil Smart, Ipswich Borough Council’s Portfolio Holder for Environment & Climate Change, said: “At Ipswich Borough Council we’re committed to reducing our own carbon emissions and helping the community better understand the climate emergency and the small (and large) steps they can take to be greener.

“That’s why we were eager to take part in The Great Big Green Week, which highlights the importance of tackling climate change and protecting and enhancing our natural environments. Our scheduled events will allow residents, community groups and businesses to sow seeds, litter pick and learn about sustainable transport and recycling.

“This is going to be the biggest event for climate and nature ever seen in the UK and we want Ipswich to get involved and play its part.”
