At the Probus Club October lunch we heard from Barbara McElroy, whose father was a Suffolk Bevin Boy. I think we were quite shocked to hear how Bevin boys, who had volunteered to be conscripted into the Army were chosen by lottery to fill a shortage of miners. We heard about the dangers they encountered underground. Barbara, now the archivist for the Bevin Boys association, told us how shabbily these young men were treated at the end of the war, with none of the recognition or benefits accorded to those who has served in the armed forces.

In December we have our Christmas Lunch, with no speaker, but we invite our wives and partners to join us in a festive meal with all the usual trimmings. From January 2024, we resume our regular lunch meetings on the last Wednesday of each month in the pleasant surroundings of the Masonic Club in Soane Street. We have a three-course lunch followed by coffee. In January our speaker is Stuart Durrell, and we will hear about the work of the Commonwealth War Graves Commission. We assemble in the bar at midday for a pre- luncheon drink, and conversation. Lunch costs are very reasonable at £23 and the annual subscription only £25. You will be made very welcome, we are a friendly group of men from all walks of life. On the second Wednesday of each month when we meet at the Westerfield Swan 11am for a coffee and conversation. Come along and get to meet us there in less formal surroundings.

Meanwhile, we extend seasonal greetings to you all.
