A Gardener’s Paradise

This July Hadleigh Old School presents a veritable cornucopia of art including paintings of fruit, vegetables, flowers and birds, all creations of award-winning Wenham artist Janie Pirie.

The gallery, located at 3-5 Bridge Street Hadleigh IP7 6BY, opens the new solo exhibition ‘A Gardener Paradise – Paintings by Janie Pirie’ at 6.30pm on Friday, 21 July. Entry is free and the show continues over two weekends in July: Saturday 22 (10am-5pm) Sunday 23 (11am-4pm) Friday 28 (10am-4pm) Saturday 29 (10am-5pm) Sunday 30 (11am-4pm). The artist is in residence providing live demonstrations on the two Saturdays.

After spending many years as a book illustrator Janie turned her attention to the flora and fauna of her own country garden. In Touch readers may recognise beautiful blooms that could have been painted in their own Suffolk gardens – lilacs and roses, ferns and tulips to the produce of the allotment or orchard such as pears and berries. Wildlife studies are equally diverse from moth to kingfisher. Her work is created with coloured pencils although watercolour does feature occasionally in her studio. Using these simple materials, she produces highly detailed, intricate and powerful illustrations.

Janie has two RHS gold medals to her name, together with Certificates of Botanical Merit from the Society of Botanical Artists, of which she is a fellow, and numerous awards from the UK Coloured Pencil Society including Best Human Portrait, Best Still Life, Best Botanical, and Best in Show.  Janie explains her motivation:

“Wherever I look I see beautiful plants – and if I stop and look closely, I see so much more.  It is this detail that inspires me – and I want to share it.  I know I will never stop drawing – there is a whole world out there to capture on paper!  I’m driven by just one thing – and that is that every piece of work I complete needs be just that little bit better than the last, because if you think you’ve reached perfection where is there to go?”

Over 70 works will be on display, in a range of sizes: “This collection is just a tiny peek into the world around us and will give you a glimpse into the amazing things we pass by each day and the details that makes them so beautiful… all with the humble coloured pencil”

Free Parking is available adjacent to the Hadleigh Iron Bridge in the former council car park.
