Deben Yacht Club

Deben Yacht Club are encouraging people to give sailing a chance.

In the past, sailing has tended to be seen as a sport for those who could afford a boat and whose family already had sailing experience. Times have changed and with more people joining who want to learn to sail, we are focusing on building skills and confidence.

Starting a new activity can be very daunting, from knowing what to wear (life jackets are essential) to how to rig the boat and how to avoid a capsize. So, as well as our training programme for beginners and improvers, we are putting on a social sailing day where newbies will be mentored by our more experienced members and get as much support as we can offer.

One of the innovations this year has been to hold a welcome meeting on Zoom to introduce the new season’s sailing events to members. This gave people the opportunity to ask questions about how the Covid-19 restrictions would affect the club’s activities and find out what was on offer.

Boat ownership is not a requirement either as we have a large number of club boats including single-handed Toppers and Qubas as well as double-handed Fevas, Wayfarers and Argos (pictured) which members can use for yacht club events. Our three new Argos are being given an official launch on Sunday 27 June with the opportunity for members to try them out. People will be on hand to help rig and launch these boats which are easy to sail as a cruiser or a racer.
