Circus skills and a visit from children’s author for Stowupland High School’s summer school

Stowupland High School has hosted a summer school – with an exciting roster of activities including a circus skills workshop and a visit from a children’s author.

The event saw almost 100 children attend the school, which is part of the John Milton Academy Trust, for a mixture of educational and extra-curricular activities.

The summer school was set up to give children extra hours in the classroom following the disruption caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Children took part in English, maths, design and technology and PE lessons as well as a circus skills workshop, cookery lessons and road safety sessions.

They were also visited by children’s author Dave Shelton – who wrote the Emily Lime: Librarian Detective series of books.

Headteacher Peter Whear said he was delighted how well the week’s activities had gone.

He said: “The summer school has gone really well – the children have absolutely loved it.

“We have had a really exciting schedule of events on offer, a mixture of curriculum-based work and extracurricular activities.

“We have had nearly 100 pupils join us for the summer school, although some children were not in every day.

“The school has put on a range of different activities throughout the week so there has been something a little different for the children every day.”

Mr Whear said they have received some great feedback from the youngsters and their parents since hosting the summer school.

He added: “We have had parents whose children intended to come in just for the first day who ended up coming for the whole week because they were enjoying it so much.

“Pupils have really enjoyed the curriculum-based classroom learning and the supplementary extra-curricular activities has brought some variety to the week.

“It has been a great success.”
